Subwoofer break-in: what it is and how to do it

What subwoofer break-in actually does to the suspension, whether it matters, and a simple, safe way to break in a new driver before you measure or tune.

A brand-new subwoofer has a stiff suspension — the spider and surround have never moved. Break-in is simply the process of exercising the driver so that suspension settles to its normal, published compliance.

What break-in changes

As the suspension loosens slightly:

  • The driver’s resonance (Fs) typically drops a little.
  • Compliance (Vas) rises slightly.
  • The driver settles to the parameters on its spec sheet.

The effect is real but small. It will not fix a wrong box, and it will not make a modest driver into a monster. It just brings a new driver to its settled state.

A simple, safe break-in

  1. Install the driver in its enclosure (the box supports the cone properly).
  2. Play moderate, low-frequency content — bass-heavy music or a low sine sweep — at a comfortable volume.
  3. Let it run for a few hours, or an overnight session at low level.
  4. Avoid hammering a cold driver at full power; gentle and patient is the goal.

Do you need to worry about it?

For a sealed box, not much. Sealed alignments are forgiving, so the small parameter shift from break-in barely changes the response — you can build one of our plans and enjoy it straight away. If you intend to measure the finished system, just give the driver a few hours of play first so the suspension has settled before you trust the numbers.

Frequently asked questions

Is subwoofer break-in real or a myth?
It is real but modest. A new driver's spider and surround are stiff; after some gentle exercise they loosen to their settled compliance, which can lower the resonance a little. It will not transform a bad design, but it does move the parameters toward their published values.
How long does it take to break in a subwoofer?
A few hours of moderate, low-frequency playback is plenty for most drivers. Some people run an overnight low-level tone; gentle and patient beats loud and brief.
Should I tune the box before or after break-in?
Our sealed plans are forgiving, so you can build and enjoy immediately. If you plan to measure the system, give the driver a few hours of play first so the suspension has settled.
